I have received my pool and want to have a trial run, can I fill the pool without a liner for this?
No. Our pools must never be filled with water without the use of a liner.

Why does the birthing pool come with a disposable liner?
Every person is supplied with a new disposable liner to give them peace of mind that they are about to give birth in a sterile environment. The pool is not to be used without one.
The liner is held in place securely by the handles at each end of the pool.

How big is The Birth Pool in a Box/Aquaborn pool?
All dimensions are specified on the Birth Pool in a Box and Aquaborn pages of this website.
All measurements relate to the widest points of the base of each pool.
Please allow a working space around the pool to compensate for the inflated sides.

How heavy is the pool when filled with water?
Weight when filled with water: 662 kgs (regular size Birth Pool in a Box) 487 kgs (mini size Birth Pool in a Box).
The weight of the Aquaborn pool has not yet been released.
A solid floor is preferable, or putting the pool in the corner of the room with joists that are rot-free, where there is more support.
We cannot guarantee that your floor will support the weight of the birth pool. You may want to get a free inspection of your joists from a wood preservation company, particularly if your house is old.

Is the birthing pool deep enough for a safe birth?
To give birth in water the depth must be at least 23 inches so that the babies head remains submerged until they are lifted to the surface. This depth is clearly marked on the pool liner as minimum.

How do I get in and out of the pool?
There are two methods of getting in and out of the pool: Sit on the side and swing legs over.
Step in/out of pool. This flexes the pelvis and can positively affect labour progress.
For either method the handles can be used for support. The top chamber can be partially deflated to make it easier for women with shorter legs to step over the sides.

Can I use a water heater in the pool?
No. A water heater will damage the pool.

How do I keep the water warm?
As you deliver your baby the water needs to be 37 degrees. Midwives are very strict about this and a thermometer is included to help you achieve this. As the pool is not suitable for use with a water heater we suggest you keep one hose connected to your tap so that you can introduce more hot water. It may also be necessary to remove some water using the submersible pump if you are close to reaching the maximum marker on the liner. This can be done at the same time as you will be provided with two hoses. It also ensures that the water is clean and fresh for your baby's delivery.

How do I empty the pool?
Use the strainer to remove any debris from the water then simply use the submersible pump provided to empty the water down the toilet or drain. Full instructions are available on this website.

How are the pools cleaned after use?
The pools are cleaned using an anti-bacterial spray. We use the same solution to clean the box, and anti-slip floor sheet. How are the hoses and accessories cleaned? We are trying a new solution called Virkon which is has been recommended to us by the Ambulance Service.

We first soak the hoses in this solution. We clean the submersible emptying pump and then use it to pump Virkon through the hoses. Finally we soak the hoses and pump in fresh clean water and pump it through the accessories. It is easy to see when they are clean as the Virkon Solution is bright pink.

To make sure the hoses and pump are dry we connect them to one of our oxygen cylinders (which all have to be cleaned and tested every 12 months) until there is no more water inside and both are throughly dry. This solution is used to clean the thermometer, tap connectors and strainer.
